We are an emerging architectural design and interiors practice working on Bundjalung land in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales. We operate across the region with our practice located in Byron Bay.
Our bespoke approach allows each project to respond fully to the site, while tailoring the design to best support the client.
Our Ethos
Functional, adaptable and congruent buildings need care and thoughtfulness to successfully realise.
Spaces that feel good to be in, whether at home, work or play, and encapsulate the season’s passing.
Architecture that is robust, resilient and flexible to adapt to changing family needs.
Site specific designs that respect the land and provide holistic and grounded sustainable building practices.

H House
Located in the tropics on a suburban block, the house design focusses on achieving thermal regularity through passive design principles.
Family needs are taken into consideration with the double entry bathroom allowing salty bodies access to the house without trekking dirt inside. The main deck seamlessly melds with the living spaces where most activities take place. The floor plan is flexible, with space for guests, a study area and studio/rumpus room within the footprint.
Situated on a small block with an existing studio, the design works with the site context to provide a sanctuary for the family now and into the future.
Stage: Design Development
A breezeway runs through the middle, doubling as a ventilation and circulation space. It can be closed off during the cooler months to conserve energy. The angled ceilings with clerestorey louvres allow warm air to escape, cool air in and reduces the need for air conditioning.
Sunshine Cottage
When a third of an enormous old fig tree fell on the extended dairy bales, a rebuild from the ground up was called for.
Due to the heritage nature of the building, extensive research was undertaken to piece together its history. Dating back to the 1890s and pre-dating the main house on the property, the bales were once part of a number of outbuildings that served the 360 acre “Rose Vale” dairy farm.
The design integrates with the remaining section. Modern updates were required to pass building legislation. The bathroom was brought up to code along with the addition of an ensuite to the new bedroom to facilitate ease of living.
Harmonious materials such as timber decking, timber posts, weatherboard cladding and timber framed windows echo the building’s origins. The thermal envelope was improved and views to the extensive garden taken into consideration.
The pool area at the main house was updated with a cabana, spa and decking.
Stage: in progress

BA BArch MArch LFA
Celia founded Innate Design with a vision to bring contemporary design and environmentally considered building practices together.
With two decades of practical experience working in and around residential architecture, Celia brings a considered and hands-on approach to every project. Her work is grounded in the belief that good design should respond thoughtfully to both people and the environment.
Celia has worked as a Research Assistant at Griffith University and tutored Studio and Construction subjects.
Since then, Celia founded Innate Design and went on to achieve Regenerative Practitioner Certification through Living Future Oceania, further developing her commitment to regenerative and environmentally responsible design.
Alongside architecture, Celia is pursuing her ideas in lighting design and is an enthusiastic learner of ceramics. Most mornings, you’ll find her walking her dogs along the beach.
